These are an attractive bright green in colour and have a very slightly velvety texture which contrasts sharply with their conspicuous red stems and red veins. 1ft (30cm)

    Germination Instructions

    Ideally sow direct. Before sowing fork and rake the soil to a fine tilth removing stones and weeds and fertilise. Sow seeds 5mm deep in row 45cm apart. Water the seeds then cover with soil. Germination takes 7-12 days but can vary. Once germinated thin to 8cm spacing, then once grown on a little thin to 30cm spacing. Can be sown indoors or under glass if the weather is unfavourable. Sow into modular seed trays and transplant to the garden in late spring.

    Growing Instructions

    Weed between plants and water during dry spells. Requires minimal attention. If growing throughout winter for harvesting offer cloche protection from late autumn to spring.

    Cultivation Instructions

    Do not allow to flower as the edible leaves will become tough and loose flavour. Harvest leaves after 8 weeks of spring growth. Cut and come again variety. Deadhead to prevent self-seeding. If self-seeded it can be difficult to control. Divide established plants every 3 years to maintain vigour.
