See also Dioon, Encephalartos, Lepidozamia, Macrozamia and Zamia. The Cycads are a group of most interesting plants and all have unusual and highly attractive foliage. About 100 species survive from this group that was 100-160 million years ago a widespread and important part of the world’s vegetation. In general appearance they look like a Tree Fern except the rosettes of pinnate leaves, crowning the short stout stem, are generally very tough and leathery. Most of the surviving species are rare, some extremely so and endangered. They are protected in most of the few countries in the world where they are still found.
Cycads are easily grown under cool greenhouse conditions, and they make tolerant and interesting house plants. Although very slow growing, they are most attractive even when they only have their first leaf to show. It would appear, however, that they are vulnerable when the seed is germinating, and for this reason it has been suggested that any seed compost used, including soil-less (which sometimes has tiny flies present), should be sterilized before use, and the seed (the size of hen/pigeon eggs) sown individually in pots. A temperature of 70º-75ºF (21°-24°C) is recommended and although germination of Cycads is normally slow, we have had reports of some species germinating in as little as a week. A rare opportunity to try these rare plants.
Description:
Interestingly enough, this species was the first ya,in 1659, ever to be described. From Florida and the Dominican Republic, it is a delightful dwarf plant with an underground, tuber-like trunk (which you are allowed to expose if you think it ornamental and would like to show it off) from which is borne a graceful plume of many, slender, slightly wavy, spreading, dark green, leathery, pinnate leaves, each two feet or so long and divided into narrow, somewhat twisted leaflets. A fairly resilient plant. 2-3 ft. Packet of 3 seeds.
