Stalwarts of Victorian gardening, and in cultivation for well over a hundred years, two of the main types are the Brompton Stocks, robust, fast-growing, vigorous plants, branching and, treated as biennials, are great for flowering in late spring and early summer; whilst the East Lothian are similar but are of a dwarfer habit. Both types can also be grown as half-hardy annuals for flowering in summer and autumn and both are beautifully and deliciously scented. As so often happens, the extra patience required for growing the plants as biennials will be rewarded by plants of a much finer quality, particularly if over-wintered in a cold frame.
