Introduction:A remarkable genus of over 500 fast growing and colourful highly ornamental species, nearly all natives of Australia, and ranging from small flowering shrubs to the tallest of all broad-leaved trees. They have a wealth of horticultural uses, including making excellent foliage pot plants, stooled or pollarded specimens, and providing aromatic cut-foliage for the floral artist. One of the most interesting aspects is that the adult leaves are usually completely different in form to the juvenile leaves, which themselves are frequently of a most unusual and attractive appearance. As regards hardiness, the majority are certainly worth trialling outdoors in this country, an increasing number having survived a few winters in the open in the U.K., some thriving 800 ft. up in the Welsh Mountains. Other species grow in areas of Australia that are subjected to a considerable amount of both frost and snow each year and there is a very good chance of proving hardy in a typical U.K. climate. As further new species are persuaded to survive long enough to flower and set seed, the list of hardy species should grow. More detailed information on the hardiness of the 40 or so species we offer is given in our paper catalogue.
Description:An important possum food! This is the fastest growing Eucalypt - anything up to 9 ft. a year, and reaching 30 ft. or more in five years. A useful timber tree. Seed germinates easily without stratification.
