Lily-like this bizarre, macabre, insectivorous plant is most definitely not, cobra-like, with its hooded, twisted, yellowish-green pitchers complete with forked tongue (or fangs, even) it most menacingly is. Insects are attracted to the plant by the brightly coloured fangs baited with small nectar glands and then enticed into the pitcher by a trail of these goodies. Satiety obtained, escape is vainly attempted through the almost glass-like windows in the roof of the pitcher, and the victims ultimately meet their doom in the brew below. The plant is not fussy as regards its diet: ants, flies, bees, grasshoppers, butterflies, beetles and others are equally enjoyed. The graceful and attractive, nodding, yellowish-green flowers, heavily veined crimson, appear in spring. Although perhaps seen at its gruesome best in a greenhouse, the plant is hardy, indeed its roots must always be kept cool and moist. 12-18 ins.
