If on your holidays in such diverse places as Devon and Cornwall, Portugal and the Riviera, you ever came across, on cliffs or along the seashore, a succulent plant with interesting, fleshy, chip-like triangular leaves almost hidden under a mantle of large, gaudily coloured, magenta (occasionally yellow) flowers, it was probably this species of Carpobrotus, not only one of the most colourful, but also one of the most easily grown of the enormous range of South African succulents. Requiring the minimum of protection during winter, and with their flowers up to 4 ins. and more across, this is a plant that everyone will want to try. The "figs" are eaten fresh, dried, cooked or pickled and, as a double bonus, the succulent leaves can be used in salads (go on! astound your friends with a plateful of green chips) or as a substitute for pickled cucumbers. 8-12 ins.
