A plant with a difference is this bold and handsome perennial from South Africa that will demand attention in any sunny, self-respecting border. It forms a smart basal rosette of large, 15-18 ins. long, dark green, thistle-like leaves, cottony beneath, from which arise rather splendid, thick, thistly stems. These bear in late summer unusual, beautiful, silvery-blue flowers with dark purple centres, each three inches or so across. Described as Dahlia-like, they are definitely a bloom with class and make a useful cut flower, fresh or dried. 1˝-3 ft.
