This is a medium-sized, deciduous shrub you may well like to try in your garden both for ornament and interest. Handsome and attractive with stout spines, it has aromatic, glossy, shining, bright green pinnate leaves turning reddish-yellow in autumn. In spring it bears clusters of tiny, cup-shaped, yellowish-green flowers followed by ornamental orange-red fruits. But they're not just ornamental! Dried and used as a condiment, either whole or ground, they are said to be stronger and more pungent than black pepper and are popular for stir-fries and Chinese salads.
