| Of the several species of Oenothera bearing this English name, this introduced and widespread (although apparently decreasing), naturalised wild flower is perhaps the archetypal one. It is an erect, robust plant with leafy stems and long spikes producing a succession of the familiar, primrose-yellow flowers from June until September. One little known fact about this plant is that it was once cultivated, at least in France, as a Salsify-like vegetable with the roots being harvested at the end of the first season. 2-4 ft. |
