From the western U.S.A. comes this very interesting and strangely appealing (apart from the odour, that is!) little plant. With its pinnate leaves finely cut into very narrow, spine-tipped segments, the whole plant has a very vaguely Thistle-like appearance. The flowers, however, are quite different. Small, tubular and pale blue, they are arranged into dense heads with each little flower neatly surrounded by a ring of very narrow, spiny bracts. We should perhaps point out that the plant is noted for its skunk-like odour! Foxes rabbits, sheep and badgers we have in the Lake District: skunks we have not and so we are unable to comment as to whether or not this is an asset! 10-12 ins.
