Description:
We have to disagree with our supplier in Chile on the merits of this species! He writes it off as having no ornamental value but we feel that it is a quite fascinating plant. Apart from its botanical interest (it’s a member of a rather exclusive family, Calyceraceae, consisting of just a few species found only in remote mountain and steppe areas in Chile and Patagonia). Found at altitudes as high as 12,000 ft., the mature plant forms itself into a shallow, circular mound, a foot or so across, consisting of a ring of attractively glaucous, spatula-shaped leaves surrounding numerous one inch, greeny-yellow flower heads. To call the whole something like a squashed cauliflower would just be a great injustice – we just can’t wait to grow some! 4-5 ins.
