Surprisingly uncommon is this rather delightful shrub or small tree, semi-evergreen in mild winters, from the south east United States. With narrow, toothed leaves, it bears in May and June umbels of beautiful salmon-pink flowers that have a beguiling scent of violets. These are followed by yellowish-green crabs that too are fragrant and are often used in preserves, pickles, sauces and jellies.
