Also known as East India or Clove Basil, this is a quite distinct species in being a much-branched, shrubby perennial, woody at the base. An agreeably, sweetly perfumed plant with fuzzy, lime-green leaves up to 4 ins. long, it bears dense spikes of small, pale yellow flowers. Burning leaves are used to repel mosquitoes but have their more orthodox uses (unburnt!) as well, both as a flavouring and, on their own, as a potherb. Now, you can grow this plant like the other Basils simply as an annual or, far more exciting, as an eye-catching specimen plant for pot or tub when, according to the size of your conservatory, it can reach a splendid 8 feet in height. 2-8 ft.
