From the Far East where it is widely cultivated not only for its many uses as a food (leaves and shoots eaten in soups) and flavouring (as an essential oil in baked goods, ice cream and the like) but as a highly interesting and attractive ornamental. With clumps of erect stems and dark green, lobed leaves, it bears in summer a succession of beautiful, yellow, crimson-centred flowers, each four inches or so across, followed by a musk-scented capsule. 4-6 ft.
